Founded in 1987, the Oregon State Holocaust Memorial Program brings events to the mid-Willamette Valley each year during the “Days of Remembrance.” The committee of faculty, students and community leaders recruit well-known speakers several years in advance.
“We’re one of the highest quality programs in the country,” said Tom Sherry, the Director of the LDS Institute of Religion on campus and a committee member for 15 years. The group emphasizes the importance of involving students since they know how to reach young people. This year Web sites like Facebook helped attract large numbers to every event.
“Our logo and our theme is to remember the past and change the future,” said history professor and committee chair Paul Kopperman. “It’s hard to change the future if you only remember the past. Every year we host another genocide-type event that has more current implications to show that the world still needs to learn.” (See story on Armenian genocide below).
